One of the most satisfying things in anime is watching the evolution of a character who starts out discredited, ignored, or even treated as useless, but little by little grows into someone genuinely terrifying because of how strong they become.
This type of journey works because it connects directly with the audience. Everyone enjoys seeing someone overcome limits, break expectations, and prove they were never as weak as others imagined. And when that evolution is well built, the impact becomes even greater.
With that in mind, I’ve separated a few anime characters who started in a very unfavorable position, but eventually became true forces of nature in their stories.
Sung Jin-Woo - Solo Leveling
Sung Jin-Woo is perhaps one of the most direct examples of this kind of evolution. At the beginning of Solo Leveling, he is known as the weakest hunter in all of humanity. Even when entering dangerous dungeons, his presence almost always feels more like a risk than an advantage.
But everything changes when he gains access to the leveling system. From that moment on, Jin-Woo begins an absurd climb in power, facing increasingly dangerous enemies and becoming an almost unstoppable figure.
What makes his strength even more interesting is that it does not come only from muscles or new abilities. He also gains control over shadows, builds his own army, and starts fighting on a completely different level from other hunters. From weak and underestimated, he becomes someone capable of changing the balance of the world.
Naruto Uzumaki - Naruto
Naruto began his journey being seen as a problem by his own village. Rejected, lonely, and constantly underestimated, he even struggled to be taken seriously as a ninja.
But what makes his evolution work so well is precisely the long path filled with defeats. Naruto does not become strong out of nowhere. He trains, fails, insists, matures, and learns to turn his pain into fuel to keep moving forward.
Over time, that loud boy no one respected becomes one of the most powerful ninjas of his generation, mastering impressive techniques, creating important bonds, and proving that his dream was not just a childish fantasy.
Izuku Midoriya - My Hero Academia
In a world where almost everyone is born with some kind of Quirk, Izuku Midoriya starts with no power at all. And within the reality of My Hero Academia, that practically destroys his chances of becoming a hero.
Even so, Deku never gives up on his dream. He studies heroes, analyzes fights, observes strategies, and keeps an incredible desire to help others, even knowing he does not have the strength to do so.
When he receives One For All, his journey truly begins. But the power does not immediately solve everything. On the contrary, at first he can barely use it without destroying his own body. His evolution is marked by control, effort, and constant learning, until he reaches the point where he becomes one of the greatest hopes of his world.
Asta - Black Clover
Asta was born without magic in a world where magic is practically everything. That alone would place anyone in an impossible position. But Asta never accepted being defined by that limitation.
While everyone around him used grimoires and spells, he relied on his own body, physical training, and an almost absurd determination. At first, many people saw Asta as a joke, someone with no real chance of competing against talented mages.
But his anti-magic completely changes that scenario. Asta begins facing extremely powerful enemies precisely because he carries an ability capable of going against the rules of that world. He does not simply compensate for his lack of magic: he turns that absence into his greatest weapon.
Eren Yeager - Attack on Titan
Eren Yeager begins Attack on Titan as someone driven by anger, trauma, and a desire for revenge. He is not exactly weak in the usual sense, but he is far from being someone capable of controlling his own destiny.
At first, Eren seems like just another desperate young man trying to survive in a cruel world. But as the story progresses, his existence becomes increasingly central to the conflict.
His evolution is one of the most complex on this list, because it is not just about becoming stronger. Eren becomes more dangerous, more calculating, and much harder to understand. The impulsive boy from the beginning gives way to a figure capable of shaking the entire world, both through his power and through the choices he makes.
Ken Kaneki - Tokyo Ghoul
Ken Kaneki starts as an ordinary student, shy and with no special ability to deal with the brutal side of the world he is thrown into. After becoming a half-ghoul, his life changes in a violent and painful way.
At first, Kaneki rejects his new nature. He is afraid, suffers, tries to preserve his humanity, and avoids accepting what he has become. But the events around him slowly destroy that innocence.
His transformation is one of the most striking because it involves physical pain, psychological trauma, and loss of identity. Kaneki stops being merely a victim and becomes someone feared, powerful, and deeply marked by everything he had to face.
Tanjiro Kamado - Demon Slayer
Tanjiro begins as an ordinary, kind, and hardworking boy, with no real preparation to face demons. His life changes completely when his family is massacred and Nezuko is turned into a demon.
From that moment on, he enters a world far crueler than he could ever imagine. At first, Tanjiro is nowhere near the level of the great Demon Slayers, but his discipline, empathy, and willpower make him evolve quickly.
What makes his evolution interesting is that he does not lose his humanity in the process. Even as he becomes stronger and stronger, Tanjiro remains someone sensitive, capable of seeing pain even in his enemies. His strength comes from both his sword and his heart.
Simon - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Simon starts as an insecure boy, used to living underground and with little confidence in himself. At first, he seems more like someone carried along by events than a true protagonist capable of leading.
But his journey in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is exactly about growing, believing in himself, and overcoming limits that once seemed impossible. Little by little, Simon stops being just the boy who dug tunnels and becomes someone capable of carrying the weight of a gigantic battle.
His evolution is exaggerated, epic, and emotional, exactly as the series demands. He goes from insecure to a figure capable of challenging absurd scales of power, making his journey one of the most memorable in anime.
Why does this type of character work so well?
Characters who start weak and become strong work because they represent a very powerful fantasy: the idea that no one is forever trapped at their starting point. Seeing someone grow, get beaten down, learn, and come back stronger creates an immediate connection with the audience.
But the strength of this type of story is not only in the final power. What truly matters is the journey. When an anime shows the falls, fears, losses, and sacrifices, the evolution becomes much more satisfying.
In the end, these characters are not remembered only because they became strong. They are remembered because they proved, each in their own way, that true transformation begins long before victory.
