Dune: Awakening Expands Arrakis With Water Wars DLC and Update 1.4
Funcom has officially released the long-awaited 1.4 update for Dune: Awakening, bringing a substantial batch of new gameplay content, explorable locations, Landsraad missions, and the game’s first self-hosted server functionality.
Alongside the free update, the studio also launched the Water Wars DLC, a cosmetic-focused expansion themed around the Water Shippers faction.
While this isn’t one of the larger narrative-focused “Chapter” updates, the patch still introduces meaningful additions that continue expanding the MMO survival experience on Arrakis.
Two New Locations Now Available
Update 1.4 introduces two entirely new map areas for players to explore:
- The Wind Pass
- The Old Quarry
The Wind Pass was once a Harkonnen technology center before eventually becoming a key Water Shipper-controlled trade route connected to Arrakis’ precious water economy.
This new region now hosts five additional Landsraad missions, giving players new objectives and rewards to pursue.
Meanwhile, The Old Quarry serves as a scalable Testing Station featuring a brand-new boss encounter.
Dr. Jalanta Introduces a New Boss Challenge
The centerpiece of The Old Quarry is Dr. Jalanta, described by Funcom as a “morally questionable” scientist.
Unlike simpler encounters, this boss fight appears designed around dedicated mechanics and puzzle-like combat interactions, requiring players to:
- Locate a hidden laboratory
- Understand encounter mechanics
- Adapt to unique attack patterns
- Prepare strategically before engagement
This type of encounter design could represent a promising direction for future endgame PvE content in Dune: Awakening.
Water Wars DLC Completes the Season Pass
The newly released Water Wars DLC is available either through the Season Pass or as a standalone $9.99 purchase.
According to Funcom, this release officially completes the game’s current Season Pass content roadmap.
The DLC focuses heavily on cosmetic customization inspired by the Water Shippers faction and includes:
- 52 Water Shippers building pieces
- 18 decoration items
- Stillsuit cosmetic variants
- Light armor variants
- Heavy armor variants
- Melee weapon skin
- Ranged weapon skin
- Scout Ornithopter variant
- Faction swatches
- Two emotes
For players invested in base-building and visual customization, this appears to be one of the game’s most extensive cosmetic packs so far.
Self-Hosted Servers Finally Arrive
One of the update’s biggest additions is the introduction of self-hosted servers.
This feature gives players greater control over their gameplay environments, potentially opening the door for:
- Private communities
- Custom roleplay servers
- Adjusted progression experiences
- Dedicated PvE-focused worlds
Funcom describes the current implementation as an early version of the system, with more options and improvements planned for future updates.
Still, its arrival marks a major milestone for long-term community flexibility.
The Polar Cap Still Looms Ahead
Although update 1.4 adds meaningful content, Funcom continues teasing much larger future additions, particularly the highly anticipated Polar Cap endgame region.
That expansion is expected to deliver more narrative-heavy content and potentially reshape late-game progression systems.
For now, update 1.4 functions more as a bridge between major content chapters while still giving active players new reasons to return to Arrakis.
Funcom Continues Refining Dune: Awakening
Since launch, Dune: Awakening has steadily evolved through large systemic updates, PvE improvements, server restructuring, and faction content expansions.
Update 1.4 continues that trend by focusing less on story progression and more on improving the game’s infrastructure, replayability, and social flexibility.
Between the new regions, boss encounter, Landsraad content, and server customization tools, this patch offers one of the game’s most feature-rich updates outside of the larger Chapter releases.
And with the Polar Cap still on the horizon, Funcom clearly isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
