Aki Irie’s acclaimed manga Go with the Clouds, North by Northwest is officially making the leap to television anime.
The announcement was made through a newly launched official website, confirming that the beloved series, known for its unique Icelandic setting and atmospheric storytelling, will finally receive an anime adaptation. To celebrate the reveal, original creator Aki Irie also shared a special commemorative illustration for fans.
A Long-Awaited Adaptation for a Distinctive Manga
Originally launched in 2016, Go with the Clouds, North by Northwest has built a strong reputation for offering something noticeably different from standard mystery or adventure manga.
Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland, the story follows Kei Miyama, a 17-year-old private investigator with several unusual traits. He can communicate with cars, struggles around attractive girls, and finds himself solving a wide variety of cases, ranging from locating missing pets to emotionally charged personal mysteries.
However, beneath these episodic investigations lies a much deeper narrative involving Kei’s own family, particularly his search for his younger brother, which gradually pushes the story into more personal and dramatic territory.
A Story Defined by Atmosphere and Exploration
One of the manga’s biggest strengths has always been its distinctive tone. Rather than focusing purely on action or traditional suspense, the series combines mystery, travel, introspection and stunning environmental storytelling.
The Icelandic backdrop plays a major role, giving the manga a rare visual identity that separates it from most contemporary works. This setting, paired with Irie’s art style, has made the series especially memorable among readers looking for something more grounded yet still imaginative.
With the anime adaptation now confirmed, many fans are particularly interested in how the production will capture the original work’s visual beauty and emotional pacing.
The Manga’s Publishing Journey
The series originally began serialization in Harta magazine before moving to Kadokawa’s Aokishi publication. After Aokishi ceased serialization in early 2025, the manga found a new publishing home through the company Yukiwarisō.
The first compiled volume of what is now considered the manga’s “second series” is set to release this week, effectively continuing the story under a refreshed publication structure.
This continuation ensures that the franchise remains active even as the anime adaptation begins development.
International Recognition
The manga has also seen strong support outside Japan. Initially licensed by Vertical in English, publishing rights are now handled by Kodansha USA, helping the series maintain international visibility.
Its growing global audience likely contributed to the momentum behind securing an anime adaptation, especially as demand for more mature and visually distinctive series continues to rise.
What Comes Next
At this stage, details regarding studio, release window or staff have not yet been revealed. Even so, the confirmation alone is significant news, especially for longtime readers who have been waiting years to see Kei’s journey animated.
If handled with care, Go with the Clouds, North by Northwest could become one of the more visually unique anime projects in upcoming seasons, blending mystery, road-trip storytelling and personal drama in a way few series attempt.
For now, fans can celebrate the fact that one of manga’s more unconventional gems is finally heading to television.
