The Irregular at Magic High School Escape and Upheaval Prologue Manga Arcs Officially End

Two manga adaptations from The Irregular at Magic High School franchise have officially reached their conclusion, marking the end of their respective story arcs.

The final chapters of Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei: Escape-hen and Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei: Dōran no Joshō-hen were published in the June issue of Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh, bringing both adaptations to a close at the same time.

Final Volumes Arrive in May

The concluding volumes for both series are scheduled to release on May 27, with Escape-hen ending at its fifth volume, while Dōran no Joshō-hen wraps up with its sixth and final volume.

This synchronized ending highlights how both adaptations were designed to cover specific portions of the original light novel storyline rather than extend beyond them.

Adaptations of Key Light Novel Arcs

Escape-hen adapts volumes 24 and 25 of the original light novel series written by Tsutomu Satou and illustrated by Kana Ishida, focusing on the events of the “Escape” arc. The manga began serialization in January 2023 and has steadily followed the source material up to its conclusion.

Meanwhile, Dōran no Joshō-hen adapts volumes 21 and 22, covering the “Upheaval Prologue” arc. It also launched in January 2023, running alongside Escape-hen as a parallel adaptation of different segments of the story.

The Legacy of The Irregular at Magic High School

The original light novel series debuted in 2008 and concluded in 2020 with a total of 32 volumes, establishing itself as one of the most recognized modern magic-based sci-fi franchises. Following its conclusion, sequel series were released, continuing the broader narrative.

The franchise has also seen extensive expansion across multiple formats, including manga adaptations, anime seasons and films, each covering different arcs and perspectives within the same universe.

Anime Adaptations Continue to Expand

The anime adaptation first aired in 2014 and has continued to grow over the years, with additional seasons and spin-offs expanding the story. The most recent third season premiered in April 2024, further adapting later arcs of the light novels.

In addition, a new anime film titled The Irregular at Magic High School: Yotsuba Succession Arc is set to premiere in Japan on May 8, showing that the franchise is still actively expanding even as some of its manga adaptations conclude.

A Structured Approach to Adaptation

The conclusion of both Escape-hen and Dōran no Joshō-hen reflects a broader pattern within the franchise, where multiple manga adaptations are created to cover specific arcs rather than retell the entire story in a single continuous series. This approach allows different parts of the narrative to be explored simultaneously while staying faithful to the original structure of the novels.

With these two arcs now completed, attention shifts to future adaptations and ongoing projects within the Mahouka universe, which continues to evolve across different media formats.
