The future of Destiny is suddenly looking far more uncertain than many fans expected.
Just one day after Bungie confirmed that Destiny 2 will receive its final major content update next month, new reports now claim the studio is preparing for “significant” layoffs.
According to a report from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Bungie currently has no Destiny 3 in development, and no new Destiny-related project has officially been greenlit internally.
Destiny 2 Is Reaching The End Of Its Lifecycle
While Bungie did not explicitly call it the “end” of Destiny 2 in its announcement, the messaging surrounding the upcoming update strongly suggested the studio is wrapping up long-term support plans.
Several comments from developers hinted that features originally intended for future updates are now being compressed into one final major release.
That wording immediately raised concerns among players that Bungie had internally shifted away from continuing long-term expansion plans for the MMO shooter.
The Bloomberg report now appears to confirm those fears.
No Destiny 3 Is Currently In Development
Perhaps the biggest shock from the report is the claim that Bungie does not currently have Destiny 3 in active production.
For years, fans assumed the franchise would eventually move toward a completely new entry following The Final Shape.
Instead, reports suggest Bungie has decided to stop trying to restructure Destiny 2 after its declining player numbers and move resources elsewhere.
At the moment, the only major Destiny-related title still moving forward appears to be Destiny: Rising, the mobile project being developed alongside NetEase.
Bungie’s Future Now Centers Around Marathon
Following Destiny 2’s conclusion, Bungie is reportedly shifting focus heavily toward Marathon, the studio’s upcoming extraction shooter revival.
The project represents one of Sony’s largest live-service bets moving forward.
However, Marathon itself faces enormous pressure.
The extraction shooter market has become increasingly competitive, and several live-service projects across the industry have struggled or shut down entirely over the last two years.
That reality makes Bungie’s reported restructuring even more concerning for longtime Destiny fans.
Internal Pitch Ideas Were Reportedly Rejected
According to the report, some Bungie staff members had proposed entirely new projects internally, including ideas connected to the Destiny universe.
However, none of those pitches reportedly received approval.
This suggests Bungie and Sony are becoming far more cautious about development costs and long-term investment risks.
Sony has reportedly pushed Bungie to reduce spending while also raising concerns internally about development timelines and budget management.
The End Of An Era For Live-Service Gaming
The situation marks a dramatic turning point for one of the most influential live-service games of the last decade.
When Destiny first launched in 2014, it helped shape the modern looter-shooter genre and became one of gaming’s biggest ongoing online experiences.
Even after years of controversy, expansions like The Taken King, Forsaken, and The Final Shape kept the franchise alive through multiple reinventions.
Now, however, Bungie appears to be entering one of the most uncertain periods in its modern history.
Players Are Worried About Bungie’s Identity
For many fans, Destiny was not just another live-service game. It became Bungie’s defining identity after the studio separated from Microsoft and moved beyond Halo.
That is why reports of major layoffs combined with the apparent absence of any future Destiny project are creating so much anxiety inside the community.
At this point, much of Bungie’s future may depend entirely on whether Marathon succeeds after launch.
And considering the current state of the live-service market, that is an enormous gamble.
