Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad Trailer Reveals Combat Abilities, Weapons, and Partner System

Bandai Namco Entertainment has released a brand-new system trailer for Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, giving fans a deeper look at the upcoming action RPG based on Reki Kawahara’s legendary franchise.

The new footage focuses heavily on gameplay systems, showcasing combat abilities, partner mechanics, weapon types, and exploration across the deadly floating castle of Aincrad.

The game is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in Japan on July 9, while the PC version via Steam arrives on July 10. Western players will receive all versions simultaneously on July 10.

New Trailer Highlights Combat and Party Systems

The latest trailer gives a much clearer look at how combat works in Echoes of Aincrad. Players will be able to fight alongside familiar characters from the anime while utilizing a variety of weapons and special skills inspired by the original series.

Combat appears to lean heavily into fast-paced action RPG gameplay, with flashy sword skills, cooperative attacks, and partner synergy playing major roles during battles.

The trailer also previews different weapon styles, including:

  • Swords
  • Heavy weapons
  • Dual-wielding combat
  • Ranged attacks

Party members like Kirito and Asuna can join players during exploration and combat, recreating the feeling of progressing through Aincrad together.

Return to Aincrad

Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad revisits the original Aincrad storyline, placing players directly inside the infamous death game where 10,000 players became trapped inside the virtual MMO world.

The game allows players to experience Aincrad from a new perspective while interacting with iconic characters throughout the journey.

Rather than simply retelling the anime beat-for-beat, the game appears to expand on side stories and alternate perspectives within Aincrad itself.

Bandai Namco also confirmed several editions of the game, each including different bonuses and extra content.

The bonus anime is included with the Ultimate and Premium versions of the game.

Aimer Performs the Theme Song

Popular Japanese singer Aimer performs the game’s theme song, titled “Live to Survive.”

The emotional style of the track matches the franchise’s familiar themes of survival, friendship, and hope within the deadly world of Aincrad.

The Sword Art Online Franchise Continues Expanding

Originally launched as a web novel by Reki Kawahara in 2001, Sword Art Online quickly became one of the biggest multimedia anime franchises in the world.

The series has since expanded into:

  • Light novels
  • Manga adaptations
  • Multiple anime seasons
  • Anime films
  • Games
  • Spin-offs like Sword Art Online: Progressive

With Echoes of Aincrad, Bandai Namco appears to be leaning heavily into fan nostalgia while also trying to create a more immersive RPG experience centered around the original Aincrad arc.
