British actor Michael Byrne, known to international audiences for his appearances in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Braveheart, has died at the age of 82.
Byrne died on June 20, 2026, following a remarkable career that lasted more than six decades and included memorable performances in film, television and theater. News of his death became public on June 30. A cause of death has not been officially disclosed.
Michael Byrne played Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter
For fans of the Wizarding World, Byrne is remembered for portraying the elderly Gellert Grindelwald in the 2010 film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.
Although his appearance was brief, it played an important role in the story. Grindelwald was visited at Nurmengard prison by Lord Voldemort, who was searching for information about the Elder Wand. Byrne brought a haunting and defiant presence to the sequence, leaving an impression despite his limited screen time.
The younger version of Grindelwald was portrayed by Jamie Campbell Bower in the same film. The character was later played by Johnny Depp and Mads Mikkelsen in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
A memorable Indiana Jones villain
One of Byrne’s most recognizable film roles came in 1989, when he played Colonel Ernst Vogel in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Vogel was a ruthless Nazi officer who pursued Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford, and his father, portrayed by Sean Connery. Byrne’s intense performance and commanding screen presence helped make the character one of the film’s most memorable antagonists.
The actor appeared in several other productions connected to war and military history. During the 1970s, he had roles in The Eagle Has Landed, A Bridge Too Far and Force 10 from Navarone.
Roles in Braveheart and James Bond
Byrne also appeared in Mel Gibson’s historical drama Braveheart, released in 1995. He portrayed Smythe, an English soldier involved in one of the film’s most disturbing early scenes.
In 1997, Byrne joined another major film franchise when he played Admiral Kelly in the James Bond adventure Tomorrow Never Dies, starring Pierce Brosnan as Agent 007.
His extensive filmography also included The Good Father, Apt Pupil and The Sum of All Fears. Throughout his career, he frequently portrayed military officers, authority figures and morally complicated characters.

In 2010, at the age of 66, Byrne played Romeo opposite Siân Phillips in Juliet and Her Romeo at the Bristol Old Vic. The unusual production reimagined Shakespeare’s young lovers as residents of a retirement home.
Among his later theatrical appearances were Mary Stuart in London in 2018 and Uncle Vanya at the Theatre Royal Bath in 2019.

Michael Byrne was born on November 7, 1943, in Hampstead, North London. He was raised by his mother, Helen Byrne, an Irish cook originally from Kilkenny.
