The Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 Drops Explosive Trailer Ahead of July 8 Premiere
After one of the longest waits in modern anime, The Saga of Tanya the Evil is finally preparing to return to television. A new main trailer for the highly anticipated second season has been released, offering another look at Tanya Degurechaff’s next military campaign before the anime premieres in Japan on July 8, 2026.
The latest promotional video presents a world moving deeper into an increasingly destructive conflict. Tanya may have survived some of the Empire’s most dangerous operations, but the new season will place her in command of a hastily assembled combat group while the war expands across several fronts.
The trailer also previews the anime’s opening and ending songs, reveals an additional voice actor and highlights the political and military pressure surrounding the Empire. Animation production is once again being handled by Studio NUT.
Crunchyroll has confirmed that it will stream the second season internationally as part of its Summer 2026 anime lineup.
The Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 Premieres on July 8
The Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 will begin airing in Japan on July 8, 2026. The first broadcast will take place on AT-X at 9:30 p.m. Japan Standard Time.
The episode will later air on additional Japanese television networks, including TOKYO MX, Sun TV, KBS Kyoto, BS11 and TV Aichi.
In Japan, ABEMA and d Anime Store will provide early streaming access beginning on the same day as the television premiere. Additional Japanese platforms will begin carrying the series on July 11.
Internationally, the anime will be available through Crunchyroll. Details regarding exact regional release times and the complete dubbed-language schedule may vary by territory.
The official episode count has not yet been announced.
The New Trailer Sends Tanya Back to the Front Lines
The second main trailer focuses on the rapidly deteriorating military situation faced by the Empire. Despite Tanya’s extraordinary achievements, the country remains trapped in a war that continues to consume soldiers, resources and political stability.
Rather than receiving the peaceful and secure position she has always desired, Tanya is once again assigned to the front lines. This time, she must command the newly formed Salamander Kampfgruppe, a combined combat unit created to respond quickly to changing battlefield conditions.
On paper, the group appears to be a powerful military force. In reality, it is a collection of personnel and units assembled under difficult circumstances. Tanya must transform these different elements into an effective fighting force while dealing with commanders, politicians and enemy nations pursuing their own objectives.
The trailer shows large-scale aerial engagements, explosions, military formations and tense strategic discussions. It also emphasizes the increasingly desperate position of the Empire as an early winter creates additional problems on the Federation front.
Tanya’s intelligence and tactical experience have allowed her to survive impossible situations before. However, the second season appears ready to challenge her with a conflict that cannot be solved through one successful operation or battlefield victory.
What Will Season 2 Be About?
The second season takes place during the autumn of Unified Year 1926.
Lieutenant Colonel Tanya von Degurechaff is appointed commander of the newly established Salamander Combat Group. The unit is expected to operate as a flexible and powerful force capable of responding to different military threats.
Unfortunately for Tanya, the group’s impressive appearance hides serious organizational problems. Its members come from different military backgrounds, and the unit has been assembled under the pressure of an ongoing war.
As Tanya attempts to organize the new force, the Federation’s winter arrives earlier than expected. The Empire becomes increasingly trapped in a conflict without a clear path toward victory.
Every major nation wants a decisive triumph capable of ending the war. However, their competing ambitions only make peace more difficult to achieve.
Tanya understands that the Empire’s situation is becoming unsustainable, but she has little power to escape her responsibilities. Once again, she must use her knowledge, military skill and ruthless pragmatism to survive decisions made by people far from the battlefield.
Season 2 Continues the Story After the Movie
The new season is expected to continue the main storyline following the events of The Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie.
The film expanded the conflict beyond the first television season and introduced Mary Sioux as an increasingly dangerous opponent. Mary possesses enormous magical potential and holds Tanya responsible for the death of her father, Anson Sioux.
Their confrontation established a deeply personal rivalry within the larger international war. While Tanya sees Mary as another dangerous enemy soldier, Mary views the conflict through grief, faith and a desire for revenge.
Several characters and developments from the movie appear in the promotional materials for Season 2, making the film important viewing for anyone who wants to understand the continuation.
The television anime’s first season alone may not provide all the context needed for the new episodes.
A Return More Than Nine Years After Season 1
The first season of The Saga of Tanya the Evil premiered in January 2017 and ran for 12 episodes. Its combination of military strategy, dark comedy, aerial combat and reincarnation fantasy quickly helped it stand apart from more conventional isekai series.
The theatrical movie followed in Japan in February 2019, continuing Tanya’s military career and expanding the international conflict.
A second television season was officially announced in June 2021. However, the project remained without a release window for several years.
New promotional activity resumed in November 2025, when the production confirmed that the anime would return in 2026. AnimeJapan 2026 later brought a new visual, trailer, staff information and a July broadcast window.
The July 8 premiere means more than nine years will have passed between the beginning of the first and second television seasons.
Despite the long absence, the franchise remained visible through the original novels, manga adaptation, rebroadcasts, merchandise and Tanya’s appearances in the crossover comedy anime Isekai Quartet.
The Opening Theme Brings Back MYTH & ROID
MYTH & ROID will perform the Season 2 opening theme, titled “Why? RED induction.”
The group previously performed “JINGO JUNGLE,” the memorable opening song from the first television season. MYTH & ROID also contributed music to the franchise’s theatrical movie.
The new song continues the intense musical identity associated with Tanya’s world. Its sound combines aggressive energy with a darker sense of frustration, reflecting a conflict that appears to have lost any clear path toward resolution.
“Why? RED induction” can be heard during the new trailer, accompanying scenes of aerial warfare, advancing soldiers and political tension.
The full song is scheduled to become available through music streaming services beginning at midnight in Japan on July 16, following a listed release time of July 15 at 24:00.
Aoi Yuki Performs the New Ending Theme
The ending theme is titled “Weiter! Weiter!” and is performed in character by Tanya Degurechaff’s voice actress, Aoi Yuki.
The German word “weiter” can be translated as “forward,” “onward” or “continue,” making the title especially appropriate for a character who is repeatedly ordered to advance through an apparently endless war.
The lyrics were written by hotaru, while Masayuki Nakano of BOOM BOOM SATELLITES and THE SPELLBOUND composed and arranged the track.
The production was designed to reflect both the cruelty of the battlefield and the small amount of hope that remains for the people caught inside the conflict.
The new trailer provides the first extended preview of the song alongside images of Tanya, her soldiers and the Empire’s commanders confronting the consequences of the continuing war.
“Weiter! Weiter!” will be released digitally at the same time as the opening theme.
Hideji Hanawa Joins the Cast as Calandro
The latest announcement also confirms that Hideji Hanawa will voice a new character named Calandro.
Specific information about Calandro’s role has not yet been fully revealed through the anime’s international promotional material. His inclusion in the new trailer suggests that he will become involved in the expanding political or military conflict.
Additional details about the character are expected to emerge after the second season begins airing.
Returning Cast Members
Aoi Yuki returns as Tanya, continuing one of the most recognizable performances of her career. Tanya’s voice must constantly move between the appearance of a disciplined young officer and the internal thoughts of a cynical former salaryman.
Saori Hayami also returns as Visha, Tanya’s loyal subordinate and one of the few people capable of remaining close to her commander during both combat and everyday military life.
The announced cast includes:
- Aoi Yuki as Tanya
- Saori Hayami as Visha
- Shinichiro Miki as Rerugen
- Tessho Genda as Rudersdorf
- Hochu Otsuka as Zettour
- Daiki Hamano as Weiss
- Yusuke Kobayashi as Grantz
- Jun Kasama as König
- Daichi Hayashi as Neumann
- Tomokazu Sugita as Mikel
- Toshiyuki Morikawa as William Drake
- Yoko Hikasa as Liliya
- Haruka Tomatsu as Mary
- Hideji Hanawa as Calandro
Tomokazu Sugita and Yoko Hikasa were previously announced as important additions to the new season.
Mikel is a Federation military mage who was previously persecuted before the war demonstrated the strategic value of magical soldiers. He eventually returned to active service and was assigned to a multinational volunteer force.
Liliya is a junior political officer connected to the Federation. Although she presents herself with a friendly and gentle personality, she remains firmly committed to carrying out the instructions of the ruling party. Her relationship with Mary could become especially important as the conflict develops.
A New Director Leads the Second Season
Takayuki Yamamoto is directing The Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2.
Yutaka Uemura directed the first season and the theatrical movie, but Yamamoto is now leading the television continuation.
Kenta Ihara is responsible for series composition and scripts, while Yuji Hosogoe returns as character designer and chief animation director.
The main production staff includes:
- Original Creator: Carlo Zen
- Original Character Design: Shinobu Shinotsuki
- Director: Takayuki Yamamoto
- Series Composition and Scripts: Kenta Ihara
- Character Design and Chief Animation Director: Yuji Hosogoe
- Sub-Character Design: Hiromi Taniguchi, Takao Maki and Shinichi Kurita
- Costume Design: Hiromi Taniguchi
- Magical Equipment Design: Ryoma Ebata and Fumihito Tsukida
- Military Setting Research: Takaaki Suzuki
- Effects Director: Takashi Hashimoto
- Music: Shuji Katayama
- Sound Director: Miwa Iwanami
- Animation Production: NUT
The extensive number of specialists working on weapons, magical equipment, effects and military research reflects the importance of technical detail within the series.
Studio NUT Returns for the New Season
Studio NUT is once again producing the animation.
The first season was one of the studio’s earliest major television projects and helped establish its reputation for energetic action animation and distinctive visual direction.
The studio later produced the theatrical movie, preserving the franchise’s unusual combination of European-inspired military technology, magical combat and highly expressive character animation.
The new trailer indicates that aerial battles will remain one of the production’s greatest attractions. Military mages fly above battlefields using specialized equipment while exchanging gunfire, spells and explosive attacks at high speed.
Ground warfare also appears to have a larger presence, with armored vehicles, infantry formations and artillery contributing to the scale of the conflict.
The Salamander Combat Group Changes Tanya’s Role
Tanya has commanded soldiers before, but control of the Salamander Kampfgruppe gives her responsibility over a more complicated military organization.
The group is designed as a combined force rather than a single mage battalion. This means Tanya must coordinate units with different functions, limitations and command structures.
For someone who values efficiency, predictability and rational planning, leading a hastily assembled force could become a constant source of frustration.
At the same time, the position gives Tanya greater influence over military operations. Her tactical decisions may affect not only her immediate subordinates but the Empire’s strategy across an entire front.
The assignment also makes it more difficult for her to escape attention. Every victory strengthens her reputation, causing senior officers to trust her with even more dangerous responsibilities.
This contradiction has always been central to the series. Tanya wants a safe position far from combat, but her attempts to demonstrate competence repeatedly convince her superiors that she belongs on the most dangerous battlefields.
The Empire Faces a War It May No Longer Be Able to Win
The Empire began the conflict believing that military efficiency and rapid victories could protect its territory. Instead, every success encouraged additional nations to enter the war.
Tanya often recognizes strategic dangers before the people around her, but her warnings rarely produce the peaceful outcome she wants.
The second season will explore an Empire struggling inside a military and political quagmire. Its forces remain powerful, but resources are limited and enemies continue to multiply.
The early Federation winter adds another threat. Cold weather can disrupt transportation, supplies, equipment and military operations, especially for an army operating far from secure support lines.
The Empire may continue winning battles while moving closer to losing the larger war.
Being X Remains Tanya’s Greatest Enemy
Behind the political conflict is Tanya’s personal struggle against the mysterious entity she calls Being X.
Before her reincarnation, Tanya was a Japanese salaryman who rejected the idea of divine authority. After dying, she was reborn as an orphaned girl in a world filled with war and magic.
Being X attempts to force Tanya into faith by placing her in situations where survival appears to require divine intervention.
Tanya responds by treating the conflict as a battle of logic and will. She refuses to offer genuine worship, even when using magical equipment connected to religious power.
This private confrontation gives the series a psychological and philosophical dimension beyond its military story. Tanya is fighting enemy nations, institutional incompetence and a supernatural being determined to reshape her beliefs.
A New Mini Anime Will Accompany Season 2
The franchise will also receive a new short-form comedy series titled Youjo Shenki 2.
The mini anime will air on AT-X after episodes of the main television series. It will also be released through the official KADOKAWA Anime YouTube channel.
Each short will remain available on YouTube for a limited archive period of approximately two weeks.
The mini anime provides a comedic contrast to the main story’s battles, casualties and political tension. Similar shorts accompanied the original television season and presented simplified versions of the characters in absurd military situations.
About the Original Light Novels
The Saga of Tanya the Evil is based on the light novel series written by Carlo Zen and illustrated by Shinobu Shinotsuki.
The Japanese title, Youjo Senki, can be translated more literally as “The Military Chronicles of a Little Girl.”
The story began as an online novel before receiving a commercial print edition from KADOKAWA. Fourteen light novel volumes were available in Japan when the second season entered its final promotional stage.
The franchise has also received a manga adaptation illustrated by Chika Tojo. More than 30 collected manga volumes have been released in Japan.
Yen Press publishes both the light novels and manga in English.
The printed versions provide additional military explanations, internal monologues and political context that cannot always be included in the anime.
The Recommended Watch Order Before Season 2
Viewers preparing for the new episodes should watch the franchise in the following order:
- The Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 1
- The Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie
- Operation Desert Pasta
- The Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2
The theatrical movie is the most important part of this list because it continues the main story and introduces developments directly connected to Season 2.
Operation Desert Pasta is a side story set before the movie. It is not as essential to the main narrative, but it provides another adventure involving Tanya and her battalion.
The comedy crossover Isekai Quartet is optional and is not required to understand the military storyline.
Why the Anime Remains Different From Other Isekai Series
The Saga of Tanya the Evil uses reincarnation as the beginning of its story, but it avoids many familiar fantasy-adventure conventions.
Tanya does not join an adventurers’ guild, explore magical dungeons or build a peaceful life in another world. She becomes a military officer in a society inspired by early twentieth-century Europe.
The story focuses on logistics, propaganda, international politics, military doctrine and institutional decision-making.
Tanya is also an unusual protagonist. She is intelligent, disciplined and capable of extraordinary violence, but most of her decisions are motivated by self-preservation rather than heroism.
Her attempts to manipulate the military system frequently create the opposite result. Every display of talent makes her more valuable to the Empire and sends her closer to the front lines.
This combination of dark comedy, strategy and psychological conflict has helped the franchise maintain an audience throughout its long absence from television.
What Has Not Been Announced Yet?
Although the premiere is approaching, some information about the second season remains unknown.
The production has not publicly confirmed the total number of episodes. It is also unclear whether the season will air continuously or be divided into separate parts.
Crunchyroll has confirmed international streaming, but release information for every language dub may be announced separately.
The exact amount of material that will be adapted from the novels has also not been officially revealed.
The trailers provide clues about upcoming characters and conflicts, but viewers will need to wait for the broadcast to discover how far the new season advances the story.
Tanya’s War Begins Again in July
The Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 premieres in Japan on July 8, 2026, with international streaming available through Crunchyroll.
The new main trailer previews the opening theme “Why? RED induction,” the ending theme “Weiter! Weiter!” and another series of increasingly dangerous operations for Tanya and the Salamander Combat Group.
After more than nine years away from television and five years since the sequel was first announced, Tanya Degurechaff is finally returning to the battlefield.
Her objective remains simple: survive the war, defeat Being X and obtain a safe life away from the front.
Unfortunately for Tanya, every new victory appears likely to take her farther away from that goal.
