The next chapter of Made in Abyss is officially getting closer.
The staff behind Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi, internationally titled Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery, released the film’s first teaser trailer alongside new details about the upcoming movie trilogy project.
The movie is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on October 23, 2026.
First Film in a New Trilogy
Awakening Mystery serves as the first installment in a brand-new Made in Abyss anime film trilogy, continuing the story after the events of Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun.
The announcement follows Kadokawa’s confirmation back in 2023 that the franchise would receive a sequel project after the second anime season ended.
While the teaser video remains mysterious and atmospheric, it already hints at another emotionally heavy and visually intense descent into the Abyss.
Main Cast and Staff Return
Several major cast members from previous entries are returning for the new film.
The confirmed returning voice cast includes:
- Mariya Ise as Reg
- Miyu Tomita as Riko
- Shiori Izawa as Nanachi
- Misaki Kuno as Faputa
On the production side, the franchise is also bringing back much of its core creative team.
Masayuki Kojima returns as director at Kinema Citrus, the same studio responsible for previous anime entries.
Hideyuki Kurata is once again handling the screenplay, while Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda return as character designers.
Fan-favorite composer Kevin Penkin is also coming back to provide the music for the new trilogy.
Classic Compilation Films Return to Theaters
Alongside the teaser reveal, the franchise also announced limited revival screenings for the original 2019 compilation movies in Japan.
Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn will screen from May 22 through June 4.
Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight will screen from May 29 through June 11.
The rereleases appear designed to help fans revisit the beginning of the story before the new trilogy begins later this year.
A Franchise That Keeps Growing
Since its anime debut in 2017, Made in Abyss has become one of the most acclaimed dark fantasy anime series of the last decade.
Despite its deceptively cute art style, the series became famous for its brutal emotional storytelling, disturbing world-building, and haunting atmosphere.
The franchise expanded through multiple anime seasons, compilation films, and the highly praised movie Dawn of the Deep Soul, which many fans still consider one of the strongest entries in the entire series.
Now, with a full movie trilogy on the way, expectations are extremely high for what comes next in Riko and Reg’s journey deeper into the Abyss.
The Mystery of the Abyss Continues
For newcomers unfamiliar with the series, Made in Abyss takes place around a gigantic unexplored chasm known as the Abyss.
The pit contains ancient relics, terrifying creatures, and deadly curses that affect anyone attempting to return from its depths.
The story follows orphaned Cave Raider Riko and the mysterious robot boy Reg as they descend further into the Abyss searching for answers about Riko’s mother and the secrets hidden at the bottom.
Each new layer introduces increasingly dangerous discoveries, emotional trauma, and mysteries that continue to define the franchise’s unique identity.
