Studio Ghibli Enters a New Era as Leadership Officially Changes in 2026

A major chapter in the history of Studio Ghibli is officially coming to an end.

Following the company’s acquisition by Nippon Television Holdings back in 2023, Studio Ghibli has now confirmed another significant transition in leadership that could shape the future of the legendary animation studio for years to come.

After serving as President for the last three years, Hiroyuki Fukuda will officially step down from the role and transition into a director position within the company.

Beginning on June 22, 2026, Kenichi Yoda will become Studio Ghibli’s new President and Representative Director.

Who Is Kenichi Yoda?

Kenichi Yoda currently works as a General Specialist within Nippon Television’s Content Strategy Headquarters.

His experience largely revolves around large-scale entertainment productions, including concerts, exhibitions, live performances, and multimedia collaborations.

However, Yoda already has direct ties to Studio Ghibli projects.

One of his most notable contributions was serving as a producer for the acclaimed stage adaptation of My Neighbor Totoro.

The production originally debuted at London’s Barbican Centre in 2022 through a collaboration between:

  • Improbable
  • Nippon Television
  • The Royal Shakespeare Company

The adaptation became a major success thanks to its elaborate stage design, live orchestra, and large-scale puppetry work created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

The play later moved to London’s West End in 2025 after breaking box office records during its original run.

Studio Ghibli Wants “New Innovations”

According to statements shared on Studio Ghibli’s official website, Yoda’s appointment is intended to strengthen collaboration between Ghibli and Nippon Television.

The company explained that combining the resources of both organizations could help create “new innovations” moving forward.

That wording has already sparked speculation among fans about how much the studio may expand into:

  • Stage productions
  • Events
  • Cross-media projects
  • International collaborations

While Studio Ghibli remains synonymous with traditional animation and theatrical films, Yoda’s background suggests the company may continue exploring other entertainment formats more aggressively in the future.

Hayao Miyazaki Remains Involved

Despite the leadership changes, legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki is not leaving Studio Ghibli.

Miyazaki will continue serving on the company’s Board of Directors as Honorary Chairman.

Meanwhile, longtime executive Kiyofumi Nakajima will remain as co-Representative Director and Vice President.

Studio Ghibli’s most recent film, The Boy and the Heron, released in 2023 and became another major success for the studio worldwide.

Shortly after that film’s release, producer Toshio Suzuki revealed that Miyazaki had already started working on yet another anime project.

As of May 2026, however, the new movie still has not been officially announced.

The Future of Ghibli Looks Different

For decades, Studio Ghibli represented a very specific creative identity centered around hand-crafted animation, emotionally rich storytelling, and the vision of creators like Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.

Now, with Nippon Television more deeply integrated into the company and a new president taking charge, many fans are wondering how much the studio’s future direction could evolve.

At the same time, Ghibli’s recent success outside traditional film production — especially with stage adaptations and global collaborations — shows the brand continues expanding far beyond animation alone.

Whether this marks the beginning of a completely new creative phase or simply a broader evolution of the studio remains to be seen.
