The Rookie: North Officially Ordered by ABC With Jay Ellis Leading New Spin-Off

The universe of The Rookie is officially expanding once again.

Following the massive success of the main series and its record-breaking eighth season ratings, ABC has officially approved production on The Rookie: North, a brand-new spin-off starring Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick, Insecure).

The upcoming series is currently planned for a 10-episode first season and is expected to premiere globally in 2027.

A New Rookie in a Much More Dangerous Environment

The Rookie: North follows Alex Holland, played by Jay Ellis, a man whose life changes completely after surviving a violent home invasion.

The traumatic event forces Alex to reevaluate his life and search for a deeper sense of purpose during middle age.

Instead of continuing his ordinary routine, Alex makes a drastic decision: he joins the police academy and becomes the oldest rookie in the Pierce County Police Department.

Unlike the urban atmosphere of the original series, the new spin-off will focus heavily on isolated and dangerous environments.

The story will reportedly place Alex in situations ranging from difficult urban zones to remote forests where backup can take hours to arrive.

The series also plans to emphasize survival elements and psychological pressure as Alex struggles to prove himself to:

  • His strict training officer
  • Younger recruits
  • And ultimately himself

Strong Supporting Cast Confirmed

ABC has also assembled a notable supporting cast for the spin-off.

Confirmed actors currently include:

  • Karen Fukuhara (The Boys)
  • Chris Sullivan (This Is Us)
  • Janet Montgomery (New Amsterdam)
  • Froy Gutierrez (Teen Wolf)
  • Mya Lowe
  • Malik Watson

The Original Creative Team Returns

Fans of the original series will likely be relieved to know that the franchise’s core creative team remains heavily involved.

Alexi Hawley, creator and showrunner of The Rookie, created the new spin-off and personally wrote the pilot episode.

Hawley is also attached to direct the first episode.

Meanwhile, franchise star Nathan Fillion, who plays John Nolan in the main series, returns behind the scenes as an executive producer.

ABC Tries Expanding the Franchise Again

The Rookie: North becomes the second official spin-off in the franchise.

The first attempt, The Rookie: Feds, starring Niecy Nash-Betts, was canceled in 2023 after only one season.

However, the situation surrounding the franchise looks very different now.

The original series continues to grow in popularity both on television and streaming platforms, with strong digital performance helping transform it into one of ABC’s biggest modern procedural hits.

The darker rural setting and survival-focused atmosphere of The Rookie: North may also help differentiate it more clearly from the main series.

A Different Type of Rookie Story

While the core concept of “the oldest rookie” remains intact, the new environment could completely change the tone of the franchise.

Instead of crowded Los Angeles streets, Alex Holland will face isolation, wilderness patrols, and situations where officers cannot rely on immediate backup.

The shift could give the spin-off a more grounded and intense atmosphere compared to the original show’s more urban procedural structure.
