Valve Removes Free Horror Game From Steam After Malware Discovery

Valve has removed the free horror game Beyond The Dark from Steam after reports revealed that the title allegedly contained malware capable of stealing user data.

The discovery came after an investigation conducted by YouTuber Eric Parker, whose technical breakdown of the issue quickly gained attention online and surpassed more than 130,000 views.

How the Malware Was Found

During his investigation, Parker identified a suspicious file called UnityPlayer.dll.

Normally, the file is a legitimate component used in games developed with the Unity engine. However, according to the investigation, the version included in Beyond The Dark had been modified to function as a malicious tool designed to steal information from users who installed the game.

Shortly after the video explaining the findings was published, Valve removed the title from Steam.

At the time of writing, the company has not released an official statement explaining the exact reason behind the removal.

What Was Beyond The Dark?

Beyond The Dark launched on Steam in December 2024 as a free-to-play horror survival experience.

The game itself never gained major popularity on the platform, accumulating only 39 user reviews with an overall “Mixed” rating before being removed.

The official description presented the game as a dark survival horror experience where players explored mysterious corridors while trying to escape an unseen threat.

Players were encouraged to “stay silent, think quickly, and survive what hunts you in the darkness.”

Unfortunately, according to the investigation, the real threat may have been hidden inside the game files themselves.

A Growing Problem on Steam

The situation involving Beyond The Dark is not the first malware-related incident connected to Steam in recent years.

Back in February 2025, Valve also removed another game called PirateFi after malware was reportedly discovered inside the title. At the time, affected users were even advised to consider fully reinstalling their operating systems.

Only a month later, another suspicious title, Sniper: Phantom’s Resolution, was reportedly removed under similar circumstances.

The repeated incidents have raised concerns among players about the platform’s moderation process and how malicious software can potentially be distributed through games disguised as legitimate releases.

Because PC games often require deep system access, they can become attractive tools for attackers attempting to distribute malware or steal sensitive information.

What Users Should Do

Anyone who downloaded or installed Beyond The Dark should take precautionary measures immediately.

Recommended steps include:

  • Running a full antivirus system scan
  • Checking for recently installed unknown programs
  • Changing passwords for important accounts
  • Monitoring email and banking activity for suspicious behavior

Users who handled sensitive information on the affected PC may also want to consider additional security steps depending on their situation.

The case once again highlights how important it is to remain cautious when downloading unknown titles, even from major digital storefronts.
